The government of Rwanda has made tremendous strides toward reaching its goal of Education for all by providing free nine-years and twelve years basic education for every child; however, girls continue to face challenges that are still hindering their Education. With support of the Sunbridge Foundation and CARE USA; CARE International Rwanda in partnership with ARCT-RUHUKA and AEE initiated one of two successful pilot projects “Better Environment for Education (BEE)”to reach an estimated 28,000 girls(ages 12-18) and 20,000 boys studying in 9&12 years basic education in four Districts (Karongi, Ngororero, Nyabihu and Rutsiro) of Western Province. Master Trainers (four per District) will be selected and trained in order to coordinate activities in schools. 600 teachers were also selected and trained to serve as mentors. The proposed Better Environment for Education project will expand on the winning strategies to have a measurable impact on vulnerable girls and boys in school by using innovative approaches to “bring girls back and keep them in schools.
